NASPGHAN Foundation Donation

Your donation will help support the NASPGHAN Foundation and its Digestive Health for Life initiatives. Your support will enable the Foundation to fund research which will provide insights into diagnosis and treatment of pediatric digestive disorders. Public awareness campaigns provide education and information for children and adolescents affected by digestive and nutritional disorders.

Many digestive diseases start in childhood and progress into adulthood. Left untreated, they can cause lifelong problems and major, long-term adverse health consequences. Digestive Health for Life campaigns are aimed at changing adult and pediatric health outcomes by promoting early detection and intervention in childhood.
 

James Heubi Timeline Fund

In 2019, way before any of us could imagine a global shut down or his own untimely and far too early loss -- Dr. Heubi envisioned and started work on a “living” timeline on the NASPGHAN website with digital, written and video materials. It is therefore in his honor that NASPGHAN proudly unveils the Jim Heubi Memorial NASPGHAN Timeline Fund – to support a digest of significant historical events of NASPGHAN over the past half century that is – just as Jim envisioned - a living document that will expand in content as the history of NASPGHAN continues to unfold and our society continues to flourish in future years. Contributions to this fund will ensure that this work is both enduring and endearing.
 

Richard J. Grand and John B. Watkins Research Prize

Drs. Grand and Watkins were among a small group of physicians that helped define the field of pediatric gastroenterology. Dr. Grand is probably best known for his pivotal contributions to the field of pediatric inflammatory bowel diseases, but he was also incredibly active in such diverse areas as studying the developmental biology of the GI tract, defining the molecular regulation of disaccharidase production, and numerous aspects of pediatric nutrition. Like Dr. Grand, Dr Watkins was a pioneer in broad areas of pediatric GI/hepatology and nutrition; from understanding lipid digestion and absorption, examining the pathogenesis of neonatal cholestasis, to defining and optimizing the nutritional needs of premature infants.

Drs. Grand and Watkins worked together to build one of the earliest “full service” GI Divisions in the country. They have been extensively involved in the formative days of NASPGHAN, are both past Presidents of the Society, and both are recipients of the Shwachman Award. It is in the spirit of the work they did together, that this Legacy Award will bear both their names.

So this year, we ask your support for this very special initiative. This award will recognize outstanding achievement in our field to be bestowed at the annual NASPGHAN meeting. We ask your help in commemorating Richard’s and John’s devotion to our society by suporting this award.
 

William Balistreri Fund

The NASPGHAN Foundation has committed to endow an award recognizing the many contributions of Dr. William Balistreri, to NASPGHAN and the entire field of academic pediatrics.

Every generation has its exceptional leaders; those individuals who transcend the norm, and make an indelible impact on their profession. Bill Balistreri is such an individual. Bill has stood for excellence in clinical care, education, and research. He has contributed more than 500 scholarly works to our field. The effect he has had in the course of his career has been profound; whether on a local level with his patients and families and the countless numbers of trainees and colleagues whose careers he has influenced, or on a national stage in the leadership roles in which he has shaped the fields of pediatrics, pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition.

For the past six years, Dr. Balistreri has led the NASPGHAN Foundation as its President with the same zeal, passion and wisdom that have defined his career for three decades. He has also served as NASPGHAN President and editor of the Journal of Pediatric Gastorenterology and Nutrition.

In honor of this extraordinary devotion to pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, nutrition, and to NASPGHAN, we are pleased to introduce the William F. Balistreri, MD Prize for Excellence in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. This award will recognize outstanding achievement in an area relevant to our field to be bestowed at the annual NASPGHAN meeting.
 

Teri Li Award in Education

This $500 award to recognize novel and/or extensive educational efforts in pediatric GI for a junior faculty (within 10 years of fellowship). As a Montessori teacher, Teri’s lifelong passion was education. This has been endorsed by the NASPGHAN leadership.

The clinician-educator pathway is currently the most commonly chosen career track amongst GI fellows and junior faculty. There are currently no recognition awards to support novel or extensive efforts in pediatric GI education. By providing recognition, such an award could help further a young faculty member’s a career as a clinician-educator.
